Jysk Fynske Medier acquires Helsingør Dagblad, Lokalavisen Nordsjælland and eight weeklies in Copenhagen area from North Media

Local daily Helsingør Dagblad has been published since 21 October 1867 and will now live on.

North Media A/S was resigned to closing the newspaper unless it could find a new owner, but the rescue operation has been a success. Together with the weekly Lokalavisen Nordsjælland, also published in northern Zealand, and eight weeklies in the Greater Copenhagen area, the Helsingør Dagblad will now become part of Jysk Fynske Medier, which already publishes 13 dailies and 53 weeklies in Jutland and on Funen.

“We’re delighted that Helsingør will not lose its local newspapers, as they mean a lot to the town and northern Zealand,” says North Media’s chair Mads Dahl Andersen. “It’s with great faith in a bright future for the Helsingør Dagblad that we now pass the paper on to Jysk Fynske Medier, which has considerable expertise in running local media.”

He says that the sale of the whole of the newspaper business marks the end of an era for North Media and illustrates a further focusing of the group’s strategy, adding that the newspaper business is more challenging than ever before and so Jysk Fynske Medier is the best possible option for ensuring that both the daily and the weeklies continue to come out.

Jesper Rosener, CEO of Jysk Fynske Medier, looks forward to continuing to publish the Helsingør Dagblad:

“Helsingør is a busy and dynamic town with an active local community, and we look forward to publishing both a daily and a weekly in the area. We’re in business to support local democracy and cohesion, and we felt obliged to try to take on this mantle in Helsingør. We hope and believe that we can combine the traditions and attachment to the local area that we’re taking over with the strengths and skills that we can bring as a large group, so that the people of Helsingør get even better products.”

Jysk Fynske Medier is also taking over eight weeklies in the Greater Copenhagen area (VanløseBladet, FrederiksbergBladet, Nørrebro/NordvestBladet, Østerbro Avis, ValbyBladet/Kgs.EnghaveBladet, VesterbroBladet, AmagerBladet and CityAvisen), Copenhagen’s free business monthly Erhverv København and websites including kbhLIV.dk.

Rosener says that Jysk Fynske Medier will be getting straight in touch with advertisers, readers, subscribers and other stakeholders in the areas covered by the papers to ensure that there is support for their continued publication.

“We’re seeing strong local backing and support for our numerous media in Jutland and on Funen, for which we’ve very grateful,” he says. “This is essential for operating local media, and so we hope to find the same in Helsingør and Copenhagen.”
